The history of Paiute people begins in the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau where they made contact with the Europeans. However the Paiutes lands expanded through southern California, Southern Nevada, south Central Utah, and Northern Arizona. They moved around very frequently, according to the seasons and plant harvests. After interacting with the Europeans, the Paiute people came in contact with the Spanish Settlers. This brought violence to the Paiute people by introducing the slave trade to Great Basin Indians. Because the Paiutes didn't want to adopt the horse as transportation, their communities were frequently raided for slaves by neighboring tribes: the New Mexicans and Americans. After the opening of the Old Spanish Trail, Slave trafficking of Paiutes increased dramatically. The Old Spanish Trail was a trade route that connected New Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. People payed the highest for children, especially young girls.
In the 1800's the Paiutes encountered non-Indian traders, travelers, and trappers, so they avoided any white settlers settling on their lands. But it soon came in 1851where the LDS church began colonization efforts in the area of the Southern Utah. And at the end of 1858 made eleven settlements in Southern Paiute Territory. Although the Mormons may have provided protection for the Paiutes from the Utes, Navajos, and Mexicans. The Mormons brought diseases that they were amune to, but the Paiutes weren't. Because of the diseases the results were ninety percent of their population lost their lives. And eventually Mormon Settlers also led the compettition over Paiute land.
